Participants will begin the workshop by exploring why safe drinking water matters, how the global community measures access to safe drinking water, and current evidence about the effectiveness of HWTS solutions (Safe Drinking Water and HWTS). Next, participants will draw their water supply systems and identify risks to drinking water safety. They will learn about water-related diseases in their region and will identify barriers (technologies and behaviours) that can be used to protect water from the source to the user’s glass (Water Safety and the Multi-Barrier Approach). With this understanding of risks and barriers, participants take a hands-on look at options for sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and safe storage of drinking water. They evaluate the benefits and limitations of various options, and they describe how appropriate water treatment and safe storage methods can be combined within a Multi-Barrier Approach (HWTS Options). Finally, participants explore what’s needed for HWTS initiatives to be successful. With scenarios and case studies to guide them, participants explore best practices for technology selection, behaviour change, and HWTS implementation (HWTS Implementation).
